Students Find Their Voice Through Music and Technology
Our students recently stepped into the roles of lyricists and composers during an engaging school-themed songwriting activity. This project offered students the flexibility to express their educational experiences either independently, in partners, or within collaborative groups. The primary objective was to craft original lyrics centered around the theme of "School," with the only requirement being that the content remained appropriate for a classroom setting.
The creative process resulted in diverse reflections on school life, ranging from the daily rhythms of reading and writing to the anticipation of "freedom" at the end of the day. Some students explored the recurring nature of subjects like math and science, while others focused on the emotional transition of moving on at the end of the school year.
To bring these lyrics to life, students collaborated with Ms. Hudson to utilize Suno.com, an innovative AI-driven music generation tool. During these sessions, students acted as creative directors, making critical artistic decisions for their tracks:
Music Style: Selecting genres that matched the tone of their lyrics.
Tempo and Beats: Defining the energy and pace of the song.
Instrumentation: Choosing specific instruments to enhance their message.
This project successfully merged traditional literacy skills with modern digital tools, allowing students to see their written words transformed into fully realized musical compositions.
